Through the Eyes of an Owl

Through the Eyes of an Owl

My name is Nashoune LittleOwl, and I am a Native American artist. Ester Lighthorse is the name I use for my written works. As an artist, I work largely with acrylics and mixed medium. I do not create the typical, sometimes expected, traditional art styles many people are accustomed to see from Native American artists.

Here in this blog I am showing my work and offer my own comments and opinions on each of the paintings below. I hope you enjoy these paintings as much as I enjoyed painting them. There are also links provided where you may purchase copies of the paintings you like.

It will take me some time to add all picture descriptions and links to poster prints, so please be patient.

Three Emperors

I painted this picture after watching something about penguins on television. I looked at their cold environment, a bleak setting to be sure. At a second glance, just looking a little closer... I could see so much beauty...everywhere. The ice surrounding the penguins varied in color and depth depending on how high or how thick or how close to the water. I watched the penguins jump in and out of the ocean, watched them feed, watched the hatch-lings peeping out from the warm feathers by their parents' feet. Such beautiful creatures that seemed to be carrying the colors of the rising sun on their chests.

Owl in the Tundra Storm

I wanted to paint an owl and after looking through, ohhh, a b-zillion internet photos of owls I chose to paint a snowy owl. Such a beautiful bird, to the point of looking truly regal.

The Public Restroom

This is a rather funny painting, largely due to it's title. I had originally titled it Redrum, but that went over like a fart in church when I tried putting it on Zazzle so I could sell it. I looked at the painting and pondered what title I should give it. Then, for whatever reason it made me think of having to use a public restroom, when there is no other alternative, of course. You get into the stall and do your business, only to find out there is no toilet paper...and you end up having to holler to someone to be a pal and toss you some toilet paper

Everyone is Looking, Everyone is Talking

I have struggled most of my life with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and several other phobias. Many times I think or interpret things that simply are not the way I am seeing and interpreting. This painting expresses that type of thinking. Everyone is looking at me with a microscope, watching everything I do. Then, people are always talking about me because I probably screwed up on something. But the worst thoughts are that I will never measure up to anything.

Daffodils of My Love for Shelly

I painted this picture for the woman I love, Shelly. I asked her what her favorite flowers were and painted them for her. I chose happy, bright colors that are compatible with joy and love and with the deepest expression of the love I hold for her in the sanctuary of my heart.

Having the Blues

This painting was totally random for me. I was having a particularly hard day emotionally and could feel my grip on my coping skills slipping away. So, I grabbed a canvass an painted what everything felt like inside of me...and what I felt was a spiraling despair. When I completed the painting I actually felt better.

Earthy, Earthy Night

I am a huge fan of artist Vincent Van Gogh. This man was simply overflowing with beautiful works of art. I decided to utilize some of the techniques he used in some of his works and created this. I like the fluid, soft, smooth movement in this painting, as well as the silent inference that space is not the empty vacuum as we have come to view or interpret it. Space is alive, not empty.

Lilies in the Water

This painting is one of my personal favorites. Again, I created this one for the love of my life, Shelly. What I was trying to express to her in this painting is that my love for her is not one-dimensional, but rather runs in all directions, forever.
